ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Captain Bill Pinkney is an American sailor and the first African American man from any nation to sail alone around the world via the Southern Ocean under Cape Horn at the tip of South America. He was born and raised on the south side of Chicago and served in the United States Navy as a hospital corpsman. After leaving the Navy, Pinkney moved to Puerto Rico where he learned to sail.

His voyage around the world aboard Commitment lasted 22 months and comprised some 27,000 miles. Throughout the trip he sent footage back to Globe TV and communicated with some 30,000 school children. The finished production titled, “The Incredible Voyage of Bill Pinkney” won the George Foster Peabody Award for excellence in children’s television programming. His journey has served as inspiration for sailors of all ages. Pinkney lives in Puerto Rico with his wife Migdalia.
