A Community of Legends: National Sailing Hall of Fame Class of 2025 Induction

Newport, RI (September 26, 2025) — Despite a rainy morning, spirits were high at the New York Yacht Club Harbor Court on Thursday, September 25, as nearly 300 guests gathered to celebrate the 15th Anniversary Induction Ceremony of the National Sailing Hall of Fame.
The Class of 2025 Induction was a heartfelt tribute to excellence in sailing, bringing together past inductees and an inspiring new class of honorees. The ceremony was marked by laughter, a few tears, and powerful stories of dedication, innovation and leadership in the sport. Attendees included NYYC Vice Commodore Clare Harrington and a remarkable showing of past inductees, whose presence underscored the lasting impact of this growing legacy.
This year’s diverse class includes Olympians, champions, yacht designers, coaches and educators, each with a unique story and contribution to the sport. Honorees in attendance were:
- David Kent Dellenbaugh
- Gregory Vance Fisher
- Hal Herman Haenel
- James Henry “Sham” Hunt
- Kenneth Wheaton Read II
- John Steven Reichel
Bruce P. King and Charles “Chuck” Hawley were unable to attend but sent moving remarks that were read during the ceremony.
Co-President, emcee and fellow Hall of Fame inductee Gary Jobson was moved by the passionate stories shared by the honorees: “Attendees at today’s National Sailing Hall of Fame induction were inspired by the compelling stories told by our eleven inductees of the Class of 2025. Every sailor credited many others in helping to reach their goals. The remarks were heartfelt and optimistic.”
Several inductees were honored posthumously, including Sally Helme, Alfred Edward “Bill” Luders, Jr., and Carl Sherman Schumacher. Their lives and legacies were celebrated through touching tributes from family members, adding depth and emotion to the day’s proceedings.
NSHOF Selection Committee Chair and Board Member Spike Lobdell was moved by the occasion. “The 11 members of the 2025 Class inducted into the National Sailing Hall of Fame each has brought distinction to our sport — through their accomplishments on the water, innovations in design, leadership in safety and education, and passion for growing the sailing community. In every case, their contributions moved our sport forward. However today we honored not just their victories, but their vision, dedication, and generosity of spirit.”
What made the ceremony especially powerful was the sense of community in the room, a gathering of sailors whose careers and races have intersected across decades. The deep mutual respect and admiration among the inductees and past honorees was palpable, a testament to the enduring bonds forged on the water.
The official Induction Booklet is available for viewing on the The Sailing Museum and National Sailing Hall of Fame’s website.
