Announcing Our New Harbor View Deck and Mini Theater
It has been an exciting spring as we just unveiled our new Harbor View Deck and Mini Theater—two spaces designed to bring visitors even closer to the heart of sailing.
The new deck offers beautiful views of Newport Harbor and Ann Street Pier, capturing the sights, sounds, and salt air of the waterfront. This serene setting invites visitors to relax, reflect on Newport’s sailing legacy, and feel connected to the breeze and bringing sailing to life.
We are proud to name the deck in honor of David K. Elwell, Jr., a devoted board member whose leadership and vision have been instrumental over the past five years. A veteran America’s Cup sailor and former Commodore of both the American Yacht Club (Rye, NY) and the New York Yacht Club, Elwell has long championed the museum’s mission. His commitment to historic preservation and deep ties to the Newport community have played a vital role in transforming the former Armory into a vibrant center for sailing heritage—most recently with the creation of our new deck!
On Thursday, May 15, 2025, we hosted a private donor event to unveil the new deck and a commemorative plaque in honor of David. The ceremony was attended by more than 120 donors, special members of our sailing community, representatives from the City of Newport, and former Mayor Harry Winthrop, whose support helped make this dream a reality years ago.
We marked the occasion with remarks from several speakers: Gordy Wagner, Interim Director and Board Member; Tom Stark, Board Treasurer; Gary Jobson, Board Co-President; and, of course, our honoree, David. An excerpt from the plaque’s inscription:
In grateful recognition for the unwavering dedication to The Sailing Museum and National Sailing Hall of Fame. Your steadfast support and passionate contributions have left an indelible mark on the sailing community.
We thank you for championing the spirit of the camaraderie and excellence that defines our remarkable sport. Your commitment has safeguarded sailing’s storied past, while charting a bold course for its future.
Located just off Schoonmaker Hall on the museum’s first floor, the deck is a perfect addition for both everyday visitors and special events, offering stunning views and an expanded capacity for programming.
In addition, we’re excited to debut our new mini theater, featuring upgraded AV equipment, comfortable bench seating, and a refreshed, inviting setting. This immersive space features video content celebrating legendary sailors and iconic regattas, debuting with a new series narrated by Gary Jobson and showcasing select footage from his personal archives.
These enhancements reflect our continued commitment to elevating the visitor experience and celebrating Newport’s maritime spirit. We invite you to come explore, engage, and enjoy all that’s new—plan your visit today!
