Seattle Yacht Club

Founded in 1892, Seattle Yacht Club is one of the country’s most active and long-established yacht clubs. With facilities ranging from the historic main station on Portage Bay, to ten outstations located along the shores of Washington and British Columbia, the club offers an outstanding group of properties for use by its more than 2,500 members.

Stories from Seattle Yacht Club

Seattle Yacht Club (SYC), with roots tracing back to the 1870s and formally established in 1892, is steeped in maritime tradition and civic spirit. Nestled on Portage Bay since 1919, its colonial-style clubhouse—listed on the National Register of Historic Places—anchors a network of ten scenic outstations stretching from Puget Sound to Canadian waters. The Club honors the legacy of Chief Sealth’s native lands while fostering its own heritage of seamanship, stewardship, and ethical marine practices.

SYC has long been a powerhouse in both sail and powerboat competition, hosting the inaugural Pacific International Yachting Association regatta and leading a century of racing excellence from junior programs to Olympic podiums. Its members have won Gold Cups, Olympic medals, and world championships. Racing events such as the Tri-Island Series and Mini 12s, as well as powerboat events like the Stimson Cup, reflect a commitment to competitive excellence across generations. The Club also played a historic role in wartime coastal patrols and pioneered boating education and navigation instruction.

Guided by the belief that everyone should have access to the water, SYC has championed inclusive programs such as the Annual Special People’s Cruise and robust youth sailing initiatives. Its social and educational offerings—from luncheons to balls, regattas to speaker events—bring together members of all backgrounds in celebration of maritime culture. With a long tradition of volunteerism and community engagement, SYC continues to serve as a beacon—literally and figuratively—for the Pacific Northwest boating community and beyond.

It gives me great pleasure to confirm the commitment of the Seattle Yacht Club Board of Trustees and its members to the goals and mission of the National Sailing Hall of Fame. Our Fleet Captain Sail, Dave Ferguson and his committee, and Past Commodore, Chris Otorowski, will be working together on the member matching fund program that I expect will exceed the Founding Club level. We look forward to watching the progress of the NSHOF and its home in Annapolis.
