MELGES: The Wizard of Zenda is a feature documentary about Buddy Melges, a self-taught sailor from Wisconsin who rose to the top of one of the world’s most technical and competitive sports. A world champion, Olympic medalist, and America’s Cup winner, Buddy defied expectations by mastering multiple boat classes and consistently outperforming elite, professionally backed teams. Known for his instinctive style and innovative thinking, he earned a reputation as a sailing “wizard” — and became one of the sport’s most respected figures. With rare archival footage and interviews with legends like Gary Jobson, Dennis Conner, John Bertrand and Bill Koch, this film tells the untold story of a Midwestern original who became a global icon — not just in sailing, but in competitive sport.
